Ohio County Engineers are responsible for 26,081 bridges and 28,970 miles of urban and rural roadways that are vital to the combined growth of jobs and prosperity in the state of Ohio.

Voters renew Mahoning County sales tax for roads
MAHONING COUNTY - Voters in Mahoning County have chosen to renew a .25% sales tax to be used for roads, bridges and other infrastructure in Mahoning County.
The tax renewal passed by 65.5%.
Annually, the extra sales tax provides about $10 million per year to the Mahoning County Engineer’s Office to improve the roads of Mahoning County.
Mahoning County Engineer Pat Ginnetti told 21 News that the sales tax has allowed the Engineer’s Office to pave about 150 miles of road since it was first passed in 2022.

Shared-use path will connect bikeway to State Route 682
THE PLAINS, Ohio – Over a dozen local residents gathered at The Plains branch of the Athens County Public Library on April 30 to see project maps and hear from local officials about a shared-use path which will connect the Hocking Adena Bikeway with SR 682.
“[The meeting] was just to help educate the community about the project,” said Athens County Planner Connor LaVelle. “We want to make sure that [residents are] kept up to date, that they’re aware of what the project is and where it’s at.”

Hune Covered Bridge rehabilitation project approved
Washington County Commissioners this week approved the rebid for the Hune Covered Bridge rehabilitation project.
The lowest of two bidders, The Righter Co., bid $2,463,197, which was within 10% of the engineer’s estimate.
The Righter Co. made a bid in March but it exceeded estimates and had to be rebid. Ohio revised code restricts bids from being awarded if they exceed estimates by more than 10% of costs.

New roundabouts planned for Lucas County 5 years down the road
LUCAS COUNTY, Ohio — Federal safety funding is paving the way for three new roundabouts in Lucas County, with construction targeted for 2031.
According to a news release from the Lucas County Engineer’s Office, the projects will be funded through grants awarded by the County Engineers Association of Ohio as part of the federal Highway Safety Improvement Program. The program focuses on reducing serious crashes and fatalities on public roadways.

Mahoning County deputy engineer selected as project manager of the year
The National Association of County Engineers recognized a local resident as the 2026 Project Manager of the Year during its annual conference, held earlier this month in Arlington, Texas.
Bob Durbin graduated from Youngstown State University in June 1992 and began working for the Columbiana County Engineer’s Office as a bridge design engineer. He was promoted to deputy engineer in 1996.
Pam Dingman is the president of NACE and the Lancaster County Engineer.
“Bob’s decades of service is a testament to NACE, and I can think of no one more deserving of this honor,” she said. “Bob’s work involving the Mahoning County Local Public Agency program has exponentially improved the lives of all who travel throughout the County.”
In 2017, Durbin was hired as the deputy engineer for Mahoning County and has served in that capacity since. He oversees the daily operations of the engineering and administration departments, programs for bridge inspection and replacement, and the county’s LPA Federal Aid program.
